How we started

Located in beautiful Powell, Tennessee, Magnolia Harbor Carefarm cultivates a space in which grieving human hearts receive compassion, connection, and community.

We are dedicated to creating a space in which therapeutic support allows clients to be in connection with rescue animals and nature and find ways to express the energy of their grief and trauma when there are no words for what they have experienced.

Our Carefarm

The mission of Magnolia Harbor Carefarm is to provide sanctuary to all beings and holistic therapy to those who have experienced trauma and grief and loss.

our Mission

When asked her 'why' behind founding the Magnolia Harbor Carefarm Dr. Bree stated, “I believe in this model of approaching work with trauma and grief and loss with my entire heart. Every element incorporated in our work at the Magnolia Harbor Carefarm has been central to my own journey through grief and is a reflection of how I show up in the world as a fellow human, lover of all the animals and nature, and as a professional. I am dedicated to creating a community in which people feel connected—connected to themselves and others, their feelings, and to every part of their broken hearts.”

WHY

WHAT IS MAGNOLIA HARBOR CAREFARM?
Magnolia Harbor Carefarm is a therapeutic program with highly specialized, evidence-based therapy for those who have experienced traumatic grief and loss and trauma. Magnolia Harbor Carefarm is also a sanctuary for all beings and is a sanctuary for more than 50 rescued animals.

Do we adopt out our sanctuary animals? The question sometimes arises about whether we facilitate the adoption of our rescued animals. Once animals join our sanctuary, they live out their lives at Magnolia Harbor. We do not facilitate adoptions, we adopt rescued animals with the sole focus of them living out the rest of their lives in our sanctuary knowing only love and compassion. We honor the bonds of animals and do not separate animal families or bonded animal friends.

WHAT IS TRAUMATIC GRIEF?
Traumatic grief occurs with the loss of someone you love due to:
  • Sudden and unexpected death
  • Violent and/or disfiguring death
  • Death after prolonged suffering
  • Untimely death
  • Multiple, cumulative deaths
  • Death with threatened death
  • Death of a child at any age & from any cause

I WOULD LIKE TO VISIT MAGNOLIA HARBOR CAREFARM...
Magnolia Harbor is unique from most sanctuaries as we are primarily a therapeutic program for traumatically bereaved and traumatized individuals. Honoring the privacy and confidentiality of our bereaved human visitors is our priority and we do not allow for or accommodate unscheduled visits.

If you would like to schedule a visit outside of the monthly Community Day or Yoga at Magnolia Harbor, please fill out the Contact Us form below.

HOW CAN I HELP OR GET INVOLVED?
VOLUNTEER! Magnolia Harbor Carefarm is a non-profit organization that depends on volunteers to help maintain the property of the carefarm and care for our animals. If you feel called to help give back and be part of the community that holds the hearts of traumatically bereaved humans and rescued animals with this type of support, we would be honored to welcome you as a volunteer. Apply here and one of our Volunteer Coordinators will be in touch with you soon!

DONATE! We are a non-profit organization that depends on donations and sponsorships to help maintain our carefarm, care for our animals, keep costs affordable for grievers, and provide scholarships to grievers who need financial support to participate. Therefore, if you feel moved to donate or create a sponsored memorial, we would be grateful for your generosity. You can donate directly on our website homepage through the link provided here. If you wish to create a sponsorship or sponsor a memorial to your loved one, you can contact our Executive Director, Dr.Bree, to determine what opportunities are available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our carefarm is modeled after the pioneering Selah Carefarm, located near Sedona, Arizona. The Selah Carefarm has been at the forefront of training and research in the Regenerative Health Social Model (Cacciatore & Gorman, 2016; Cacciatore, 2017, 2020)—a holistic, multi-systems approach designed to create spaces where the biological, emotional, spiritual, and social self can find opportunities for renewal through health, emotional safety, and compassionate connections across species and with the earth. This model is defined by five core elements: 1) health, 2) safety, 3) connection, 4) between humans and non-humans, and 5) within a sustainable environment that benefits the earth. This transformative approach was featured in Oprah and Prince Harry's Apple TV series, The Me You Can’t See(Episode 4), where the founder, Dr. Joanne Cacciatore, also served on their mental health advisory board for several years. Since 2017, nearly a dozen research studies have been conducted on the Selah Carefarm model, further validating its effectiveness in promoting healing and resilience.
